Functioning of LBK
In their daily action, LBK is somewhat of a misfit. In contrary to the other student organisations, where the new presidia are elected as a team, the members of the LBK-presidium are elected individually and per function. Though this way of working is off course very democratic, it might have as a consequence that the whole presidium acts as a disorganized and incompatible organ. Though, year after year LBK proves otherwise. The only explanation for this astounding fact must be that LBK is and has always been one big family.
The presidium itself consists of more than 180 people, all together to contribute to very varying and differs activities to make LBK what it is today. This przsidium is split up in workgroups, leaded by an responsible. Together, all responsibles make up DB ("Dagelijks Bestuur" or "Daily Managment") were 5 of them live together in a house called "Fakhuis" which is the beating heart of the organisation. Here the non-profit organisation is located and the most of the stuff is stored.
Apart from the members of the “Fakhuis”, we also find the next persons in DB: the Secretary, the Business Relationships Responsible, the Gnorgl Manager and his accountant, the Baarr (our cafetaria) Responsible and his accountant, the Sports Manager, the Responsible of Cultural Activities, the International Responsible, the Responsible of Education and his Secretary, the Responsible of the Course Material Service and the Online Responsible. They are expected on the weekly Presidium Meeting (PV) to discuss the daily working of LBK. Every member of the Presidium is welcome to join this meeting. Decisions are made on the General Meeting (AV) and the Board of Directors functions as a advising organ in long term decisions.
Of course the18 people of DB can’t carry the full weight of LBK. That’s why some of the daily leaders are assisted by their workgroups: Public Relations, Culture, Sports, Baarr, Festivities, Logistics, the Webteam, International, Communication, Gnorgl and finally Education.
Besides that, LBK also has 4 ‘regular workgroups’, that are in charge of organizing one single event: the Welcome team (looks out for the first year students), Prom (organizes the prom), Revue (puts up the annual parody play about the professors by and for students), IFR (leads the Interfacultary Rockrally, a music competition among the faculties).
Finally, there are 3 ‘special workgroups’ who are the icing on the delicious cake that is LBK. IAAS (International Association of students in Agricultural and related Sciences) organizes activities of fraternization among different faculties with biotechnological roots from all over the world. Bloedserieus (‘Bloodserious’) leads the organization of an event encouraging blood donation by combining it with various ‘bloody and bloodthirsty activities for the donors. Currently, BEST was added as special workgroup. BEST (Board of European Students of Technology organises different activities where students of technology from member universities get the chance to complement their fields of study, discuss educational matters, learn and take their first steps into an international career,... .
It should be pretty clear that LBK is not a faculty group as any other but is a lot more complex. But, as the KUL strongly advocates diversity, LBK is known to be a diverse family of friends for years.
